Programs:
The Naturalist Adventure camp will explore a variety of locations here at Stark Mountain, in the Mad RiverValley, and in the surrounding areas. Each week, parents will be notified of the schedule for that week. Our flexibility will allow us to take advantage of weather, water, and trail conditions for the best possible experience. We plan to have one day each week on the water with canoes and/or kayaks, and to have a mixture of activities each week, including rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, swimming and two overnight camping trips. Learning about and exploring the natural world is an essential component of the camp; however, your kids will never feel like they are “at school.” It’s summer – we plan to have fun!

Here is a sample of our planned programs:
  • Single Tracks and Trails: Biking, Forest Ecology, and Swimming in the Mad River Valley and surrounding trails.
  • The Mountain Rocks!: Rock-Climbing and Geology at Stark Mountain, Bolton ledges, Sugarbush climbing wall, Petra Cliffs, and swimming (if it’s hot!)
  • Watershed Wisdom: Kayaking or Canoeing, Birding, and Aquatic Ecology on the Winooski River and the Mad River.
  • Wilderness Skills: Hiking, Wildlife Tracking, and route finding at Stark Mountain, Sunset Ledge, Snake Mountain, and other great locations!
  • The MountainForest: Biking/Hiking/Rock Climbing, tree and plant identification, and natural history of the Green Mountains.
  • Lake Adventures: Flat water paddling (kayak or canoe), bug and butterfly identification, and fishing (optional) at Blueberry Lake, Bristol Pond, and other local lakes or ponds.
  • Stark Mountain Summits: Hiking and overnight camping at Stark Mountain or nearby shelter, map and compass use, and camping skills. Dates to be planned based on enrollment and parent/camper input.
