The 2012 Triple Crown Series
Triple Crown Schedule
Unconventional Terrain Competition - Saturday February 11
Vertical Challenge Friday March 2
Mogul Challenge - Saturday, March 25
The “Ski It If You Can” mantra has long defined Mad River Glen as the home of New England’s most challenging terrain. But a key question needed to be answered. Who is Mad River Glen’s best all-around skier? No single race or competition can truly measure the all-around ability of any skier. The Mad River Glen Triple Crown Competition Series answers the question.
The Triple Crown Series combines the results of the Unconventional Terrain Competition, the Vertical Challenge, and the Mogul Challenge to crown the king and queen of the mountain. The series kicks off with the Unconventional Terrain Competition where skiers are challenged “Ski It If You Can” steeps, cliffs, jumps, and rocks, as they plunge down the relentless Lift Line course. The grueling Vertical Challenge is the second leg of the Triple Crown, testing how much vertical competitors can rack up in one day. To make matters worse the competitors are required to ski the demanding Chute - Lift Line trails. The Triple Crown wraps up with the knee-pounding fun that is the Mogul Challenge. The winners of the Triple Crown series are crowned in the Basebox Lodge after the Mogul Challenge. If you are looking for a true challenge, some great competition, and amazing prizes why not test your mettle in this unique season-long competition series?
Thanks to all of our Triple Crown Sponsors!
THE MISSION of the Ski The East Freeride Tour (STEFT) is to synchronize the Eastern freeride community by providing a consistent platform for collaboration, recognition, and progression of competitive freeride skiing, its individuals, and the regional mountains that are promoting this aspect of the sport in the East Coast.
Previously, four competitions were operating independently of one another at Mad River Glen, Magic Mountain, Sugarbush, and Jay Peak. These events have become well respected over the years, with some touting over 15 years of operation, and are the only existing freeride competitions on the East Coast. By integrating each event into the collaborative STEFT, we've created the opportunity for additional camraderie, prize offerings, and media exposure for the contestants, events, and mountain resorts that host them.
STEFT has generated additional awards to each event including an overall tour cash purse of $4000 for the top male and female alpine ski finishers at each event; a helmet, ugly sweater, and streetwear for the Big Air "Cliff Huckstable" award presented by Bern Unlimited; and a mega Ski The East clothing and accessories prize package to all male and female podium finishers. Also, STEFT aims to ramp up the event apres parties that celebrate each competition and the tour collectively. Everything from group "shot skis" at the bar, to frozen t-shirt contests, to live music.
The STEFT will receive full event coverage on SkiTheEast.net with in-depth news articles, photos, video edits, and a feature-length compilation movie slated for web and television broadcast. The STEFT will facilitate event awareness on a larger scale by garnering mainstream print, television, and internet medias.
NEW AGE REGULATIONS FOR 2012
At the 4 main Ski The East Freeride Tour events, no skier ages 13 and under (as defined by January 1, 2012) will be permitted to register/ compete unless they are one of the 30 contestants who were admitted via one of the 3 Junior Qualifier Events:
1/14/12 - Mad River Glen - Jr. Unconventional Terrain Competition
1/28/12 - Jay Peak - Jr. Jay Peak Extreme Challenge
2/4/12 - Sugarbush - Jr. Castlerock Extreme Challenge
The top 10 skiers from each Junior event will move on to qualify for all 4 main STEFT stops.
For more Jr. event info - Download PDF and see Registration page.
The bottom line: The Ski The East Freeride Tour is offering the ski community the best possible event production and media coverage for the only freeride competition circuit the East Coast has to offer.
Through executing a collaborative four-stop tour, the STEFT has been officially sanctioned by the International Free Skiers Association (IFSA), the governing body of the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour. As a result of this, the STEFT has adopted and integrated the IFSA judging criteria and points system. By incorporating the IFSA,
THE SKI THE EAST FREERIDE TOUR MALE AND FEMALE OVERALL POINTS WINNER WILL BE AWARDED PREQUALIFICATION INTO THE SUBARU FREESKIING WORLD TOUR.
This is an incredible opportunity which will allow the top East Coast talent to compete in a world-class event series hosted in South America, Canada, and the Western U.S.
