On Saturday, October 2, as part of the Mad River Glen Green n Gold weekend, 47 runners completed the 12th Annual Stark Mountain Hill Climb run. A number of finishers went on to compete the next day, Sunday, October 3, in the Allen Clark Memorial Ride up the Appalachian Gap to qualify for awards in the duathlon division. For results on the Allen Clark see The Run Hill Climb is put on by the Stark Mountain Foundation. This year’s proceeds will go to the Green Mountain Club to fund improvements and maintenance on the Long Trail where it traverses Stark Mountain.

The three women duathlon women all herald from Vermont. Audrey Huffman, a 43 year old mother of two from Waitsfield, took first place for women in the run, breaking the course record that stood for about 10 years. The old record set of 30:09 by Harriott Shea of East Montpelier was snuffed out by Huffman who ran 29:40:35. The next day Huffman finished third overall woman in the Allen Clark Hill Climb (Bike) and took the duathlon championship with a women’s duathlon course record of 1:00:22.14. The previous women’s duathlon record of 1:08:43 was set by Sara Walker in 2006. Second in the women’s duathlon went to Dot Helling, 60 year old attorney from Montpelier in an overall time of 1:19:11.78, and third to Rebecca Ryan, 53, of Huntington in a time of 1:21:32.99.

The men’s duathlon record of 53:25 set by Thorin Markinson in 2006 went unchallenged. First male duathlete was Terry Kellogg, 37 of Waitsfield, Vermont, in 55:25:88. Second went to John Cico, 51, of Manlius, New York in 57:36:26. Charlie Tipper, 50 from Burlington, Vermont, took third in a combined time of 59:41:96. Full duathlon results can be found at

Saturday’s run threatened slower times because of the wet conditions and erosion from Hurricane Nicole’s visit the days before. Dave Dunham’s overall course record of 23:51:05 set in 2007 stood. The men’s overall was won by Terry Kellogg in 28:06:97, followed by Patrick Hamel in 29:06:10, virtually tied with Charlie Tipper who placed third overall in 29:06:11. Audrey Huffman’s overall women’s win and course record, 29:40:35, was good enough for fifth overall amongst the men. Second for the women was Laurie Greenberg, 35 of Warren, Vermont in 31:26:12, and third went to Georgina Milligan, 44 of Middlebury, Vermont in 31:47:28.
