Wolaver’s – Mad River Glen Backcountry Challenge! - March 20, 2010, 10:00 AM
This challenge pits you against the backcountry! This is not a race. There are no winners and no losers - only those who finish the course and those who don't. Choose your gear - telemark, snowshoe, or randonee - as you adventure through the rugged terrain of the Green Mountain spine. A raffle of aweso me prizes follows the challenge. Sponsored by Wolaver’s Organic Ales. Entry fee is $15 and lunch is included!

Enjoy the beauty and magic of the moonlight on snow, while exploring the nature of Stark Mountain! This easy to moderate outing includes hot chocolate. Advanced reservations are requested for this outing.

Wildlife Tracking Trek – 12/19, 1/17, 2/6 , 3/14
Discover the wild side of the Green Mountains in search of tracks and sign of Vermont's animals and birds, while learning about their ecology and habitat. Moderate difficulty.
Family Snowshoe Adventure – 1/3, 1/18, 1/31, 3/7
Join us for a special outing designed with families in mind! Everyone is welcome! This trek covers relatively easy snowshoe terrain while learning about Vermont’s forests and wildlife. Appropriate for ages 5 and up.
All About Bears – 12/20, 1/16, 1/30, 2/28, 3/21
See the numerous signs of Black Bear activity at Mad River Glen on a moderate to difficult hike to our Nature Center (2.5 miles). Discover the facts and lore about winter hibernation, eating habits, and basic ecology. Two to Three hours.
Woodland Snowshoe Trek – 12/12, 1/10, 1/24, 2/7, 3/6
Explore the hardwood and boreal forest ecosystems of Stark Mountain, while learning which trees are called moosewood, rock maple, and shadbush! Easy to moderate difficulty.
Moose on the Loose – 12/13, 1/9, 1/23, 2/27, 3/28
Stark Mountain is home to our largest mammal – the moose! See evidence of these fascinating animals learn all about their behavior, what they eat, and seasonal cycles. Moderate difficulty.
Signs of Spring Snowshoe – 3/13, 3/27, 4/3
By mid-March, the days are getting longer, new migratory birds are starting to appear, and the sugar maples start flowing their sweet spring sap. Join us on this easy outing to explore the most recent sightings! All ages and families are encouraged.
Outbound Snowshoe Adventures
Available Daily – By Advanced Reservation Only
Join one of our experienced outdoor and naturalist guides for a day-long adventure that you’ll remember - exploring the backcountry trails of the Green Mountains by snowshoe! Discover local gems, like Molly Stark’s Balcony, Wind Gap, or Burnt Rock. Lunch, snowshoes, and transportation are included. Ages 12 and up. 5 to 6 hours. $50 per person.

Mad River Glen's Naturalist Programs are led by an incredibly experienced guides;
Allan Thompson is a professional consulting Forester and Wildlife Biologist and holds a bachelors degree in Wildlife Biology. Working throughout Vermont Allan has developed an extensive understanding of Vermonts unique and diverse ecology. Allan has 5 years experience in outdoor science education and is an avid skier and outdoor enthusiast.
Cory Stephenson is a place-based educator with a Master’s in Environmental Studies and over 9 years of teaching experience. Working both in schools and with the greater community, she strives to bring the wonder of nature to students of all ages. When not out in the woods, you can find Cory spending time with her children, skiing, biking or gardening.
