Early Opening

Published On November 19, 2018

We are pleased to announce that MRG is going to open for the season this coming weekend. It will be one of the earliest openings in our illustrious history and it’s just the way we were hoping to kickoff our 70th anniversary season. Check out how the mountain is looking, you’ll be blown away! This certainly is a November to remember as we have seen well over 2′ of snow so far this month. This new snow coupled with our vaunted snowmaking effort and our summer drainage work on the mountain has enabled us get an early jump on the season.  Our plan is to open with skiing off of the Single Chair and we expect to have most of the upper mountain terrain open for your skiing pleasure. While skiing surfaces should be pretty sweet the snow pack may be on the thin side down low, but hey it’s MRG right?

The lift will spin from 9 am to 3:30 pm on Saturday and Sunday. We will close mid week next week and re-evaluate based on weather/conditions. All season passes will be honored this weekend and we are offering $69 day online tickets too. Don’t forget that General Stark’s Pub will also be re-opening Thanksgiving Weekend, with dinner served on both Friday and Saturday nights. We sure hope you can join us for what promises to be an opening of near epic proportions. Here are all the details for the weekend;

Thanks so much to the Stark Mountain Foundation and the Preserve Our Paradise Campaign for being instrumental in making this early opening possible.  The installation of nearly 60 new culverts on the mountain  along with judicious re-grading by the mountain ops team has enabled us to open with less snow than we could previously. Where there used to be water bars that required being filled in with snow we now have drainage that goes below the trails.  We also made strategic upgrades to our snowmaking infrastructure that gives our system significantly more flexibility and the ability to maximize  snowmaking windows of opportunity. These upgrades include a new pump, buried power lines, more hydrants and more guns. In fact we just had two new ones delivered this week boosting our system-wide total to 7. While that might sound like a small number (It is!) it is vital to Mad River Glen’s operations as we focus snowmaking on the high traffic, lower elevation areas of the mountain. Learn more about our unique operational philosophies.
