Skiing For Scholars Program

Skiing For Scholars!

The Mad River Glen Cooperative’s Skiing for Scholars Program is made in an effort to enable local students to enjoy the sport of skiing. This unique program will run on Friday afternoons from 2:00 until 5:00 and is available to students in the Mount Abraham and Harwood Unified School Districts.

The program offers free all-mountain skiing from 2-4 pm on Fridays, plus extended skiing until 5 pm on the Practice Slope lift.

According to Matt Lillard, Mad River Glen’s General Manager, “The rising cost of skiing makes it difficult for some kids to have access to the sport. This program will enable more of our local students to get outside and experience the joy and thrill of skiing.” Mad River currently offers free skiing programs for elementary school kids, and this grant will enable services to be expanded to middle and high school students as well.

The goal of the program is to encourage our local youth to get outside, feel a sense of accomplishment, and experience the camaraderie that is an essential part of skiing. It is also a natural extension of Mad River Glen’s commitment to encouraging youth to ski. This commitment is exemplified by the mountain’s twenty-year tradition of offering free season passes to all kids under the age of 12. “This is a tremendous opportunity for Mad River Glen to expand free skiing beyond the elementary schools,” notes Lillard.

Mad River Glen is America’s only skier-owned, community-based, ski area and part of our mission includes encouraging affordable, recreational access to the mountain. This innovative program is designed to do just that for local youth.
