Preserve. Protect. Rebuild.
The MRG Pub is more than just a building — it embodies the spirit of our skier community.
It’s where cold fingers wrap around warm mugs, where acquaintances become friends, and where generations of skiers have
gathered to laugh, connect, and share stories after unforgettable days on the mountain. From birthday toasts to powder-day
celebrations, the Pub has always been the center of the MRG community.
However, after more than 65 years of service, this cherished space is in critical need of reconstruction. It’s important to
understand, this isn’t a renovation, it’s a complete reconstruction.
Built in 1960 with modest materials and methods of the day, the structure now faces serious challenges: compromised beams, an
aging foundation, outdated electrical and plumbing systems, and insufficient insulation. Flooding and moisture intrusion have
damaged even recently installed equipment.
MRG Pub: Preserving character, ensuring continuity, rebuilding with purpose.
The Stark Mountain Foundation (SMF) annual fundraising campaign is focused on supporting the full reconstruction of the MRG
Pub — the centerpiece of the Basebox and a gathering place for the MRG community. This is not a cosmetic renovation. It is a
necessary, long-term investment to protect the building’s structural integrity, ensure safety, improve energy efficiency, and enhance
the guest experience. This project is not about changing what we love — it is about preserving it for the next 75 years. We are not replacing the Pub’s character — we are reconstructing its bones.
The new design honors the Pub’s historic architecture and enduring aesthetic. From the beams overhead to the mountain views
out the window, the spirit of the building will remain unmistakable. But we will rebuild it to meet the needs of today and tomorrow — ensuring safety, energy efficiency, and functionality without losing the raw charm and character we all cherish.
- Thoughtful modernization allows us to improve comfort, efficiency, safety, and accessibility while preserving the Pub’s
authenticity.
- Historic preservation remains a guiding principle — every decision is made with an eye toward honoring the building’s
current state historic value.
- Emotional stewardship recognizes that this is not just a building project — it’s a promise to the community that the Pub will
remain a place for gathering, celebration, and shared tradition.

Why this project matters?
This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to ensure the MRG Pub remains a vibrant and functional part of Stark Mountain’s
future. The project team—comprising members of the Facilities Committee, Finance Committee, and Vermont Integrated
Architecture—has thoroughly assessed the need and developed a plan that balances historic preservation, financial
responsibility, and operational improvements.
1. Structural Integrity & Longevity
- The Pub portion of the Basebox was built in 1960 using outdated construction methods and substandard materials.
- Structural assessments have uncovered major deficiencies in load-bearing elements, including columns, beams, and floor
framing.
- The foundation has visible gaps and allows water intrusion, which has already caused flooding and damage to newly installed
equipment.
- Without reconstruction, the long-term viability of the building is at risk. With it, we secure the structure for the next 50–75
years.
2. Enhanced Guest Experience
- More windows will increase natural light and mountain views.
- Better acoustics will improve ambiance for music and conversation.
- A modest expansion of the deck will improve usability, especially during peak times.
3. Life Safety & Code Compliance
- The building fails to meet current safety and fire codes.
- Exit paths and door heights do not comply with regulations, and
emergency egress improvements—like raising the rear exit—are
urgently needed.
- Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems are outdated and
potentially hazardous.
- The project must comply with Act 250 and historic preservation
mandates, adding complexity—but ensuring long-term safety and
sustainability.
4. Energy Efficiency & Cost Reduction
- The Pub is currently one of the least energy-efficient buildings on the mountain.
- It suffers from poor insulation and significant air leakage, resulting in high heating costs and discomfort.
- The roof will be rebuilt with insulation beyond code, which improves both energy performance and interior acoustics.
- Snow management improvements will prevent maintenance issues that currently require costly intervention.
5. Operational Improvements
- A redesigned wait station will streamline staff workflow and reduce congestion and slip hazards.
- The bar area will be upgraded with a safer, more functional layout and non-slip flooring.
- New plumbing and electrical systems will reduce breakdowns and eliminate the high cost of frequent repairs.
- More windows will increase natural light and mountain views.
- Better acoustics will improve ambiance for music and conversation.
- A modest expansion of the deck will improve usability, especially during peak times.

Why the high cost:
- Working within an existing structure
- Meeting historic preservation, Act 250 and energy code requirements
- Accounting for inflation and 2026 material price uncertainty
Delaying the project will only increase the financial burden due to inflation and regulatory changes.
The call to action
Stark Mountain Foundation’s annual fundraising campaign is focused on supporting this essential
reconstruction effort. Major donors will lead the way, however support from the entire MRG
community is vital.
This is not an optional project — it’s a necessary rebuild. Without it, the structural, safety, and
operational risks will continue to grow and operational costs will escalate.
